The young pianist Yejin Gil has already won several piano prizes. Her scintillating, ambitious playing style is characterized by an uncompromising musical authenticity. Her debut CD featuring works by Chin, Ligeti, Boulez and Messiaen was an overnight success, receiving a glowing review in The Guardian and winning the Coup de Cœur awarded by the Académie Charles-Cros, one of the most important French critics’ choice prizes.

Yejin Gil was the artist in residence at the 2014 Impuls Festival and her performances were broadcast live on the MDR radio station. In late 2015, she recorded her second CD featuring compositions by Mussorgsky, which she had previously performed in France and Germany. In July 2016, she interpreted Messiaen’s Turangalîla at the Staatsoper in Hamburg under conductor Kent Nagano. This evening, she will be playing works by Scriabin, which she already recorded at Teldex Studio in the fall of 2016 for her third CD on the Berlin label Bastille Musique.

Yejin Gil started playing the piano at the age of five. After completing a diploma at Seoul National University, she began studying at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where she obtained a second diploma with a distinction. She won several competitions during her studies, including the Korea National Competition (first prize), the Köhler-Osbahr-Wettbewerb (first prize) and the Concours international d’Orléans (the only finalist to have won the four main prizes). Yejin Gil lives and works in Berlin.
