Music has an endless array of styles. From baroque to hard rock. From Gregorian to jazz. Musicians – in particular those with wide-ranging repertoires who deliberately choose not to settle on a single style – need an instrument that can accommodate and embrace this variety. It is with these musicians in mind that the new C. Bechstein Academy A 4 piano was conceived. Its completely new design allows the player to bring out the true essence of every musical genre.

Our Development Department and piano makers have absolutely outdone themselves and we couldn’t be happier with the result! The C. Bechstein Academy A 4 sounds wonderfully distinguished and elegant – and yet fresh and impulsive at the same time. This unique sound profile and the outstanding action of the Academy A 4 mean it can be used for any kind of musical requirements, be it for personal use or as a working instrument for professional use.

Technical Specifications – Brief overview

ACOUSTIC ASSEMBLY

SOUNDBOARD
The soundboard and ribs are made from selected, fine-grained European mountain spruce, which is stored for years and dried carefully. The ribs are not tapered towards their end until they have been glued onto the soundboard. This promotes the elasticity of the board. The bridges consist of solid European beech with European beech caps.

BACK FRAME
Six robust, quadruple-laminated braces made of layers of solid pine form the stable backbone of the upright piano. The sophisticated design with groove and mortise and tenon joint supports the vibrating soundboard and absorbs bending forces from the cast-iron frame.

PINBLOCK
High-quality pinblock material made from cross-laminated and compacted sheets of beech veneer ensures excellent, even tunability and tuning stability (Delignit).

TUNING PINS
Quality tuning pins made from nickel-plated steel. Balanced torque, low torsion, excellent tunability and tuning stability, with tuning pin bushings.

CAST-IRON FRAME
The cast-iron frame has the stability needed to withstand the enormous string tensions.
Thanks to careful sizing and the traditional method of sand casting by hand, the cast-iron frame also enhances the sound.

STRINGS
Made from quality piano wire with high tensile strength and valuable copper wire from Germany, the strings have been calculated to maximize string length with balanced registers, harmonious overtone spectrum and excellent tuning stability. The strings are held in place by a cast-iron V-bar in the bass and a beryllium copper V-bar with brass pressure bar in the middle and treble. No duplex system.

ACTION & EQUIPMENT

C. BECHSTEIN DYNAMIC TOUCH DESIGN
The highly reliable C. Bechstein actions are developed in-house and allow perfect control and execution in any position of the key movement and offer quick repetition as well as a pleasant and even touch. Every key is balanced individually.

KEYBOARD
A quality keyboard made of solid spruce keys with man-made white key tops and ebony sharps. Precise key movements are ensured by high-quality, wear-resistant bushing felt.

PEDALS
3 pedals: Piano (una corda), moderator and forte (damper).

C. BECHSTEIN HAMMERKÖPFE
Developed and produced in-house, C. Bechstein hammer heads are a significant and consistent factor in the unique sound of the C. Bechstein Academy line – made with the highest-quality elastic felt and mahogany mouldings. The intricate, multi-stage process of voicing is performed to C. Bechstein quality standards.
