Saleem Ashkar and Beethoven

Beethoven cycle by Saleem Ashkar on CD and live in Prague and Duisburg.

Saleem Ashkar once stated that his life has changed since he started performing all thirty-two piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven. After interpreting the complete set of sonatas by the German composer in various locations including Gateshead and Berlin, he intends to play them again in Duisburg during the 2017/2018 season. He will play sixteen sonatas during recitals to be given at the Lehmbruck Museum in November 2017 and in February, April and May 2018, and interpret the remaining works in the following season. Moreover, Ashkar is to continue his Beethoven cycle at the Saint Agnes convent in Prague with recitals scheduled on November 27, 2017 and February 26, April 16 and June 4, 2018, so that he will have interpreted all thirty-two piano sonatas by Beethoven in the Czech capital by the end of the 2017/2018 season.

First part of Saleem Ashkar’s Beethoven cycle released on the Decca label

The long-established Decca label recently released the first double CD in the Beethoven cycle with piano sonatas interpreted by Saleem Ashkar. It includes the Sonatas op. 2 Nr. 3, op. 10 Nr. 1, op. 27 Nr. 2 and op. 109, recorded on a C. Bechstein D 282 concert grand at the Berlin-Britz manor. Critics praised Ashkar’s brilliant, powerful and self-confident play, confirming once again the artist’s rank among the best interpreters of works by the German composer.

Saleem Ashkar plans to finish the recording of the complete set of sonatas by Beethoven in 2020, the year when the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death is celebrated.
