“House of Music”: 111 years of passion

PIANO-FISCHER celebrates a jubilee: the 111th anniversary of “Haus der Musik”; perhaps a funny number for a jubilee, but certainly a testimony to a passion for music and keyboard instruments that has spanned several generations. A series of events, including the successful “Bechstein Days”, have been organized in Stuttgart and Munich.

The company logotype conveys a basic statement: the wording “FISCHER – House of Music since 1904” under a stylized grand piano. Today, PIANO-FISCHER is a modern, family-run business steeped in a great tradition and one of Germany’s most successful piano dealers. The company shares its passion for keyboard instruments with customers at three showrooms in Southern Germany that boast more than two thousand square meters of exhibition space.

The company headquarters are located in Schorndorf, a town near Stuttgart where Johannes Karl Fischer and his wife Lydia founded the business in 1904. A talented organ player, expert craftsman and churchgoer, Johannes Karl Fischer developed a special harmonium tailored to the needs of missionaries overseas. In his Schorndorf workshop, he built a three-octave, easily transportable harmonium that proved to be an export hit and became famous under the nicknames “tropical harmonium”, “hallelujah organ” and “Jerusalem tractor”. Over the years, the Fischer company enlarged its product range to include various other instruments, including a pedal harmonium.

Although sales dropped during World War II, Richard and Anna Fischer revived the company when they took it over in 1950. Pianos became increasingly important for the “House of Music” in the following decades. In 1970, master piano-maker Dieter Fischer and his wife Sylvia became the new managers of the family-run business. They expanded the company as they opened several concert halls and founded music schools, not to mention a concert and an artist agency. They also opened new showrooms in Stuttgart (1979), Schwäbisch Hall (1986) and Munich-Lehel (2001).

In 2012, Christian and Eva-Maria Fischer took over the reins and prepared the business for its 111th anniversary. They boosted the product range, developed a new workshop, recruited more trainees and continued to support young pianists, making PIANO-FISCHER fit for the future as it enters its fourth generation.

With a staff of thirty-five employees, including twenty-three piano-makers and three trainees, the company offers the best advisory and after-sales services. PIANO-FISCHER not only sells and repairs new and second-hand instruments, but can also restore century-old grand pianos. Furthermore, the company organizes regular concerts with such outstanding artists as Rudolf Buchbinder, Nikolai Demidenko, Marc-André Hamelin, Margarita Höhenrieder, Radu Lupu, Murray Perahia and Grigory Sokolov.

A statement by Christian Fischer describes the company philosophy: “A musical instrument is more than just a product. It’s a gateway to the world of music. Music enables you to express your joie de vivre and contributes to both your well-being and emotional balance. We consider music to be an integral experience for the body, the spirit and the soul.” Accordingly, the success of PIANO-FISCHER feeds on excellence — and the Bechstein pianos play a crucial role in this context, of course…

The company has been a Bechstein dealer since 1975. As Dieter Fischer, former manager and member of the supervisory board of C. Bechstein AG, states: “In the last forty years, our business relationship has blossomed into a partnership and even a strong friendship.” His son Christian adds: “Bechstein has always been important to us – and will continue to be in the future, too.”
