Actress Eva Mattes plays a successful pianist who withdraws from the world after the death of her son. A young piano student offers to help her overcome her grief and ultimately perform on the stage again. The dramatic intensity of the showdown between the two women gives the play a particular theatrical quality.
Frank Alva Buecheler first staged Nino Haratischwili’s piece in 2015. Both actresses are “doubled” by professional pianists, who play works by Rachmaninov, Ravel, Chopin and Schubert, so that the theater piece is also an exquisite musical event. Pianist Dudana Mazmanishvili, who enjoys a special relationship with Bechstein pianos, is Liv Stein’s alter ego as she plays a C. Bechstein grand.
